From August to October 6, 2018, Harbin Engineering conducted a pilot study for Rabun County to evaluate the effectiveness, feasibility and economic benefit of mining and processing C&D wastes received and disposed of at the C&D landfill facility. The study assessed whether density could be increased if waste was excavated, processed, and compacted and whether any recovered waste could have economic value.
Within the boundaries of the study, results demonstrated a 47.6 percent decrease in volume and a 22 percent increase in density. Harbin engineering concluded that a minimum of 2.5 additional years of capacity would be added to the landfill if all C&D waste was processed. Following this study, the design and operation plan for the Boggs Mountain Road C&D Landfill was updated to include a waste excavation and processing section.
