Harbin Engineering designed and permitted an onsite non-domestic septic system for a cattle processing facility in Madison, Georgia. The work included the completion of a hydrogeologic evaluation, EPD wastewater injection permit, construction plans, detail drawings, and wastewater treatment. Steps to ensure the protection of human health and the environment included the design of a grate on the kill floor to convey the drainage of blood into a 3,000 gallon tank for separate disposal, and a controlled flow rate so that treated wastewater infiltrates into the subsurface rather than the surface water. The hydrogeologic evaluation found that the facility was not within an inner management zone and that the septic system posed no risk to the groundwater drinking supply.
The septic system was also engineered with future expansion in mind. All grease interceptors, treatment systems, dosing tanks and drainfields were designed based on future expansion needs. Harbin Engineering maintained correspondence with the Georgia Public Health Department and the EPD throughout the design and permitting process to ensure regulatory compliance.
